A Heart of Stone

A 400-ton limestone block sliced like a loaf of bread, a 7-foot gorilla hewn from Sonoma basalt: Welcome to the world of Petaluma sculptor Edwin Hamilton, whose life is grounded in the ancient, elemental craft of shaping rock.

A legacy of stonemasonry

Edwin Hamilton has been building with stone as a sculptor and stonemason for thirty years, apprenticing in Europe before returning to found Hamilton Stoneworks.

As a stonemason Edwin has partnered with noteworthy architects on ambitious projects, using his expertise to enhance the overall design vision. Through this exacting work he has developed the unique skill set that enables his artistic practice. His sculpture is a contemporary expression of the dignity and gravitas evoked by stone monuments through history.

Natural inspiration

There are echoes of natural forms in Edwin’s work, but they have been re-imagined in complex assemblages that simultaneously honor and challenge the tradition of the medium. The Hamilton Stoneworks team is comprised of craftsmen who have years of combined experience and a reputation for precise and timely work.

“A properly built stone wall relies solely on gravity for its strength. It is a guardian of the true.”

— Cormac McCarthy, from “The Stonemason”
